The
1st phase of the park's transformation is
scheduled to begin in May 2012 and end November
2013. On Tuesday, October 18th, New York State Parks announced that $15 Million, set aside in 2006 for the 1st phase of the demolition of 15 dilapidated structures at the Nissequogue River State Park, had been released by the Governor's office. The work is scheduled to finally begin in the spring of 2012.
See letter below from the NRSP Foundation, Assemblyman Fitzpatrick, Assemblyman Englebright and Congressman Bishop asking State Parks Commissioner Harvey to begin the cleanup and master plan process for the Nissequogue River State Park.
Letters ask Governor Cuomo to re-appropriate the $25 million Senator Flanagan secured for the remediation and redevelopment of the park in his 2011-12
Executive Recommended Budget.
On Tuesday November 9th, 2010, the Office of State Parks released the results of an engineering study they commissioned for the Nissequogue River State Park. The study includes the projected cost of demolishing and removing all 57 structures on the 368 acres added to the park in 2006. Although the $215 million dollar estimate to remediate the site seems unusually high and could be much lower, it's important to emphasize that the true cost of the cleanup will not be known until State Parks issues and selects a winning bid for the demolition work.
Prior to sending all the demolition work out to bid, the NRSP Foundation hopes State Parks will first create a master plan for the park to determine how it can and should be used in the future. A master plan will also help identify what buildings on the property could potentially be adaptively reused for cultural, historical and educational purposes. We believe preparing a clear vision for the park could help reduce the final remediation cost for the state.
The foundation has also encouraged State Parks to establish public-private partnerships to help finance the redevelopment of the park based on the master plan. This could also help reduce the state's remediation cost and help make the park self sustaining. Organizations, such as the Long Island Music Hall of Fame and the Airmid Theatre Company, have expressed interest in these partnerships and we believe they should be vigorously pursued.

Plan for the park The Nissequogue River State Park Foundation is a not-for-profit community based organization committed to working diligently with our town, county, state and federal government representatives to create a compelling and inspiring design for both a passive and active park. The foundation focuses its efforts on evaluating and recommending strategies that properly utilize the parks assets for cultural, historical and recreational purposes. This involves establishing a network of public-private partnerships to help make the park self sustaining. Some of these uses could include: recreation/swimming center, spa and wellness center, amphitheater, campground, picnic area, vineyard, handicap accessible trails, conference center, sports complex, restaurant and catering facility. The Nissequogue River Park Foundation funds various beautification projects throughout the park. Our efforts help protect and preserve the fragile ecosystem that exists in the park and surrounding area while meeting the diverse needs of the community.

While New York State continues to determine the costs associated with the mitigation of the uplands portion of the property, the Kings Park Community must be prepared to move forward with a plan and vision to insure that our state park will meet the needs an expectations of the local community. Prolonged inaction would be unwise and irresponsible. Click Here to Make a Donation!
